How to keep flowers in floral foam fresh for more than 3 days
At Studio Flor , we frequently use floral foam to create free-standing bouquets and arrangements. It's a practical and elegant solution because it doesn't require a vase, but it also requires some care to keep the flowers fresh for more than three days.
Here we share some simple tips with you:
1. Hydrate the foam properly 💧
Before placing the flowers in the foam, it must be completely soaked in fresh water . Never press it down; let it absorb water naturally so it becomes evenly saturated.
2. Add water daily 🚰
Even if the flowers are in the foam, it dries out quickly. Check the humidity level and add a little fresh water directly to the foam every day.
3. Use clean water with preservative 🌸
If you have flower food packets, mix them with the water you add. They help maintain freshness, prevent bacteria, and prolong the life of the stems. If you don't have a preservative, you can prepare a homemade mixture with 1 liter of warm water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice . This formula lowers the pH, energizes the flowers, and helps them absorb water better. You can also add a few drops of bleach to reduce bacteria.
4. Place the arrangement in a cool place ❄️
Keep flowers away from direct sunlight, radiators, heating appliances, or strong drafts. Heat accelerates dehydration and wilting of the petals.
5. Remove wilted flowers 🌿
If a flower begins to droop, remove it from the foam. This way, you'll prevent the process from affecting the others and maintain the beautiful appearance of the arrangement.
6. Gently spray the petals 💦
Some flowers, such as hydrangeas or roses, appreciate a light mist of water on their petals to keep them fresher longer. Do this carefully to avoid damaging them.
